Tricks-N-Tips
The Powder Sock.
One of the most useful tools you'll use is, the Powder sock. Use a new, smooth textured, cotton or nylon white sock & stretch it over a baby powder canister. Squeeze until half full & tie an overhand knot to secure the sock. To use, fluff the sock until the surface is well coated with powder & pat the makeup area firmly. Rotate the sock periodically to keep the powder flowing & avoid patting a color without rotating the sock before patting again. Some colors will lift off & transfer if you don't.
After powdering, pat firmly with a powder puff to complete the setting process & brush away excess powder with a soft fluffy brush.
Below you can see the process of applying a whiteface makeup & setting it with a powder sock. This is an excellent exercise to practice your skills & not as easy as you think. It can become the basic first step to many character makeups. Also learning to draw clean lines on a perfectly smooth whiteface is one of the most important skills to perfect. Here's a task to try. After your whiteface is applied, patted out & powdered, paint a perfectly round quarter sized red circle on each cheek. Make sure they are symetrical & set them with powder. Now take a fine brush & outline each circle with a thin black line, keeping the same thickness all the way around so each circle looks exactly alike. If you mess up, cleaning off the area & patching the white to start over can be a challenge too. Good Luck !
This process can be used for any full coverage base whether it's white, gray, zombie color, etc.
As you first start dabbing on the makeup & smearing it around, don't be bashful. Go for it & start patting all over to even out & remove any streaks.
